Art Therapy Psychotherapy Emdr therapy

Art Therapy

At times words fail to convey our deep thoughts and feelings, making it difficult to express ourselves. Art therapy grants us the opportunity to reveal, heal and transform. The art therapy process can elicit both the release and holding/containing of that which needs attention and care. Through the creative act, images can lend way to deeper understanding and bring new insights and perspectives. Art making can help us imagine new possibilities, bring awareness to patterns and develop alternative approaches to life's challenges.

There are no prerequisites or art skills needed to benefit from art therapy.  Various approaches are used and tailored to meet individual needs and issues, as well as backgrounds and comfort levels. Options may include art prompts, setting intentions as well as experimentation and play. I work collaboratively with you to make connections and deepen understanding of yourself, your process and your unique art making approach and style.

Psychotherapy (Talk Therapy)

I believe Psychotherapist DW Winnicott is right, "It is a joy to be hidden, but a disaster not to be found." It’s comfortable and nice to hide in the shadows, conceal our deep feelings and say ‘all is fine’. Doing this too much, however, can leave us isolated and disconnected from ourselves, our relationships and a collective whole.

Through in person or telehealth sessions, I offer talk therapy to help individuals process/reprocess difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences with a non-judgmental, supportive and collaborative approach. As appropriate or deemed beneficial, I utilize DBT, CBT, IFS parts work, Mindfulness practices and EMDR to aid in this process. Please see descriptions below.

  • DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) acknowledges that two opposite things can be true at once, allowing one to accept difficult feelings and find ways to cope and manage with them simultaneously.

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) looks at how our thoughts effect feelings and behaviors and helps to reframe and challenge thoughts which impede our health and well being.

  • IFS (Internal Family Systems) acknowledges that we all have parts within us that serve to protect and manage more vulnerable parts of ourselves. The core self is a courageous and compassionate part which we work with to help manage the more extreme roles other parts play in attempts to soothe and manage pain.

  • Mindfulness practices help us to arrive in the present moment and pay close attention, without judgment to our internal sensations and feelings as they arise. Mindfulness practices help us to respond and regulate our physiology and lessen intense reactions to difficult thoughts and feelings by observing rather than being consumed by our emotions.

  • EMDR (Eye movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) aims to reduce symptoms of trauma by changing how memories are stored in the brain to diminish distress. EMDR is an 8 phase model involving history and treatment planning, preparation, assessment, treatment and re-evaluation.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR Therapy)

EMDR helps individuals heal from the symptoms and emotional distress of unprocessed trauma and disturbing life experiences.

When left unmanaged, unresolved traumas can cause one to feel out of control of one's emotional states and reactions.

The aim of EMDR is to regain a sense of control. The repeated redirection of attention caused by the eye movements used in EMDR therapy creates a neurobiological state making way for traumatic and emotionally charged memories that are held up in our psyche to be processed.

EMDR is a powerful method for gaining a sense of control and empowerment over your life.
